• @pryorcreek_turf Some call me crazy, but here’s my frost theory at Pryor Creek.

Our cue comes from the south-facing tin roof on our maintenance shop. When it starts dripping, we start golfing. There may still be frost in the shadows, but we’ve seen very little damage with this approach.

It’s a practice built on our observations here, and it won’t fit every golf course. For us, it has become a valuable way to accommodate a busy daily tee sheet and outing schedule through the shoulder seasons.

Now that the clocks have fallen back, afternoon daylight is precious. On a 50–55-degree day, we can still do approximately 200 rounds—even in November. Every hour of a morning frost delay affects how many golfers can finish before dark.

We were facing a problem: turning away rounds and events despite having a beautiful day ahead. This is how we chose to solve it while continuing to watch how our turf responds.

Some call it crazy. I call it knowing your property, learning from experience, and solving problems. That’s what golf course superintendents do every day.
