Have you done your winter blowout yet? What are some of the tips you would share for newbies going through this process for the first time? ⁠
⁠
Heres a few ... ⁠
#1 Make sure the air pressure in the system does not exceed what the system is designed to handle as too much air pressure can damage or blow off sprinkler heads! Pressure should never exceed 50 psi for polyethylene pipe or 80 psi for PVC pipe. ⁠

#2 Use a regulator or valve to control air pressure prior to introducing it to the irrigation system. ⁠
⁠
#3 When done with your blowout and you start to close your test cocks, pump station ball and gate valves, it’s best to close them all the way down and then just barely back off. These valves can sometimes have a little bit of moisture where the seal is set, which can freeze, and then pop off and break.⁠
⁠
#4 An Exception to the Back-off Rule: Make sure you completely shut the main isolations from the pumps. These must be completely closed so that the main line doesn’t slowly fill over the winter.⁠

During the Northwest GCSA Turfgrass Expo at the Coeur d’Alene Resort earlier this month, Superintendent Tom Walker graciously allowed us to shadow his team for the morning as they prepped the course for play. It was particularly interesting to learn more about the famous Floating Green. ⛳️ It’s a special course and they’ve got an amazing crew looking after it!
