Chris from Elephant Rock Golf Course has excellent steering/driving skills, but this manual hand tool allowed him to quickly needle tine a dry spot on the edge of the green, which was then hit with a few minutes of hand watering with a wetting agent.

Synchronized Seeding! Overseeding Greens Really is an Art Form, and a Science!

In prepping for the Greens winter overseeding, Red Mountain Ranch Golf Superintendent Nick Vonwiegen had everyone on his team walk their drop spreaders 1,000 square feet to properly calibrate.

They dropped 2.5 pounds per 1,000 sq feet (broken into two groups) of Simplot Turf’s Pure Select Creeping Bentgrass (aka Agrostis stolonifera), and 16 pounds per 1,000 sq feet (also broken into two groups) of Poa Trivialis.

All four groups follow one another, doing a full lap of the outer edge of the green.

Two groups then drop out, while the other two groups make one additional lap in the same direction.
Then all four groups move into the interior section of the green, going in two directions with each seed to make sure they don’t miss any areas.

All the while, each group marks their path with their own unique color of spray paint.

It’s not every day that you are traveling in Scotland and stop to visit former coworkers/friends from the US now living in St. Andrews, and you tell them you’d really like to see the Old Course, and it just so happens that the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is going on! But, that’s what came together one year ago. Walking the historic Old Course was quite magical!
